Welcome to Plant based Solutions (PbS) (an UMU spin-off Co.)

At PbS we have spent more than 15 years researching into our research lab and greenhouse at UMU, to achieve a natural development that has allowed us to obtain plants rich in phytomelatonin, selecting hypergenerating plants and applying a natural elicitation system, obtaining plants with high phytomelatonin contents for their different applications (see Services):

  • Human and Animal Nutrition

  • Cosmetic

  • Agronomy

PbS-Phytomel - Our history

We are a technology company specialized in the cultivation of plants rich in phytomelatonin, emerged as a spin-off of the University of Murcia (UMU). In this space, we want to share our story and allow our visitors to learn more about us.

The idea of generating plants rich in phytomelatonin arose in 2012 as a result of two research reflections: on one hand, our analysis of phytomelatonin in a large number and types of plants, where we found that the levels of this compound were very low; and on the other hand, our idea that we could contribute to achieving a natural substitute for chemically synthesized melatonin, avoiding the presence of undesirable byproducts. The antecedents to this objective began in 2000 when, in a casual collaboration with Prof. J.A. Madrid (Director of the Institute of Chronobiology of the UMU and Professor of Physiology) we carried out a study on the antioxidant capacity of melatonin in mouse plasma. We considered that there could be some dependence on intake and its composition and from there we jumped to measure the presence of melatonin in feed and its plant components. The visit in 2003 of Prof. R.J. Reiter (Grand Master of melatonin and former EIC of J. Pineal Res.) to the UMU served as a driving force to start our journey in the world of plant melatonin.

PbS-Phytomel Co. is backed by some 25 years of research on plant melatonin, not only for its endogenous contents in a multitude of species and varieties, but also for extensive physiological and biochemical studies on the role of phytomelatonin in plant function. I encourage you to consult our publications and discover the enormous role of this molecule and the great importance it has in practically all the vital processes of plants and whose R+D has served us as a driving force for this commercial adventure.

Finally, it should be noted that, in this field of natural products, knowing the research that has led to obtaining a marketable product is of crucial importance, since in many cases products of dubious origin or composition are sold without scientific guarantees. In our case, the company is led by the same UMU researchers, university professors, who came up with the initial idea in 2012, from the Phytohormones & Plant Development Lab - UMU.

Our Services

Here, we present the different services that our company can offer, both commercially and research-based through the design and implementation of R+D+i projects. Phytomel-Plants

Phytomelatonin-rich plants

Service 1: Raw Material

Our plants rich in phytomelatonin, from medicinal-aromatic plants (MAP), elicited, cultivated and harvested in organic method, contain high levels of endogenous phytomelatonin, between 75-100 mg phytomelatonin/Kg DW, duly stabilized and ready to undergo extraction or for direct use such as infusions, feed, or another.

Service 2: Phytomel-Bio

From our phytomelatonin-rich plants, we make different solvent-free extracts, with final phytomelatonin concentrations between 0.5-1.0 % (w,w). Several of these stabilized extracts with remarkable antioxidant properties (rich in polyphenols, carotenoids, vitamin C, etc.) are applicable in human nutrition for the manufacture of nutraceuticals, dietary supplements; in animal nutrition (livestock and pets) for incorporation into feed, dietary supplements, others; or for use in the production of cosmetics such as creams, lotions, etc.

Service 3: Phytomel-Agro

We have managed to produce extracts rich in phytomelatonin aimed at its use as an agricultural biostimulant and phytosanitary (plant pathogen safener) qualities. These extracts, aimed at their use as germination activator, seedling growth in seedbeds, rooting promoter and with plant resilience capacity against abiotic and biotic stress, have proven efficacy in plant development and as improvers of the post-harvest process in fruits, flowers and vegetables. Its formulation allows rapid root, foliar or fruit absorption with guarantees of scientifically proven efficacy.

Service 4: Other plant materials

valerian-root.jpg
Saffron.jpg

We have obtained extracts with moderate phytomelatonin content from valerian root (Valeriana officinalis L.) and from the residues of the saffron flowers (Crocus sativus L.).

In the first case, we have verified how at the relaxing qualities of valerian root due to valerenic acid also contribute as its phytomelatonin content of these roots as a synergic sedative and tranquilizer natural compound.

In the case of saffron floral residues, we have obtained an extract with a particular polyphenolic profile in which its phytomelatonin content stands out, where these components provide excellent biofunctional properties for use as strengtheners of functional foods such as plant-based milks, margarines, bread products, etc. Also by cosmetic products.

Service 5: R+D projects

Our group at UMU has proven a great experience in R+D. Since 2000 in phytomelatonin and since 1990 in plant antioxidants in the fields of Phytochemistry, Plant Physiology, Plant Postharvest Food Technology and on Plant Hormones and Synthetic Phytoregulators, our research group has been developing numerous international, national and regional competitive public projects. In addition, our commitment to Transfer+Innovation has led us to develop interesting projects in collaboration with private companies, from the agricultural, agri-food, and human and animal nutrition sectors.

Our Research Offer:

  1. Natural biostimulants in seedbeds. Biofortification of horticultural plants and fruit trees.

  2. Natural compounds in MAPs (aromatic-medicinal plants) and spices.

  3. Post-harvest improvement of fruits and vegetables through natural extracts.

  4. Application of plant by-products in human and animal nutrition. Phytogenics in petfood.

  5. Analysis of phytohormones in plant material.

  6. Analysis of natural antioxidants in foods.

  7. All kinds of studies on phytomelatonin.

As consolidated researchers, it is an obligation to make available the consultation of our CVs where you can check all our contributions such as publications, conferences, projects, etc.

Fill in the form in S3 and tell us your needs about this topic (ref. S5).
